I recently hosted the Maggie Top, Tunic, & Dress Sew-A-Long on the Sewing Pattern Testers Blog.  During the process, I had the wonderful opportunity to network with some amazing sewists, as well as some dreamy fabric.  You can read all the posts for the sew-a-long here:  BSD Maggie Sew-A-Long.

Today I am going to highlight two different versions of the Maggie Top, Tunic, & Dress Pattern featuring gorgeous fabric from LA Finch Fabrics.  The first version of the Maggie is a long-sleeved dress for my 18-year-old daughter, Harley.  It is made from gorgeous Wine Marsala Double Brushed Poly Knit.  The second is a long-sleeved tunic I made for myself with fabulous Garden Floral Party Ponte de Roma Knit.

Before I get started talking about these versions of the Maggie, I want to thank Leslie and LA Finch Fabrics for contributing these absolutely stunning fabrics.  The DBP knit is buttery soft (softer than the leggings from that super popular company).  It was a dream to work with.  I have never worked with Ponte de Roma before, and I was a little nervous about it.  It has less drape and more structure than the DBP, but it was very easy to work with and manipulate!

Harley fell in love with the Maggie dress and asked me to make it for her out of the Wine Marsala Double Brushed Poly Knit to wear for her senior pictures in the snow.  She hasn’t had them taken yet because our entire valley has been snowbound for weeks and we can’t get anywhere.

She was freezing taking these pictures.  I wish she would have pulled the dress down a little because it fits way better than it looks in this picture.  This fabric really worked well to help this dress be a little more flow-y.  I love the contrast of my girly-girl dressed up with her unlaced combat boots and basketball bruised up legs.  She’s a tough one!

We were fighting the elements the whole time taking these pictures, and I think she finally just gave up.  Harley has worn this dress multiple times already, and the girls in her class love it so much they want to use that pattern for their May Day Program dresses (there’s only 11 of them, so it isn’t a huge number).

For myself, I made this long-sleeve Maggie Tunic out of this beautiful Garden Floral Party Ponte de Roma Knit.  I am NOT a floral girl, but this fabric completely converted me, and I fell in love! I’m not angry, I promise, it was really bright, and I couldn’t stop squinting.

The Ponte de Roma has a wonderful structure that really works well with the Maggie Tunic.  This fabric is a stable knit, making it a great choice for someone new to sewing with knits.

I have long arms, and I like to wear my sleeves on the longer side anyway, so I extended the sleeve length two inches.  For me, they are perfect.  If you want to learn more about the Maggie Top, Tunic, and Dress, be sure to check out the Sew-A-Long links, or visit Bella Sunshine Designs to see all the fabulous tester photos.
