Unlucky Thirteen?

Nope, not unlucky at all. Wonderful, lucky, beautiful, frustrating, loving, awesome, perfect!

  • Thirteen years ago I became a mother.
  • Thirteen years ago Jess became a father.
  • Thirteen years ago four people became grandparents for the very first time.
  • Thirteen years ago an aunt and uncle were created.
  • Thirteen years ago my life changed forever.
  • Thirteen years ago I was blessed with this child, this beautiful baby girl.
  • Thirteen years ago she was 20 inches long and weighed 6lbs. 12ozs. Today she is 58 inches tall and weighs 75lbs.
  • Thirteen years ago she wrapped my heart around her little finger and that is where it has stayed ever since.
  • Thirteen years ago I was naive and thought I knew it all. She taught me more than I thought I knew.
  • Thirteen years ago I fell in love at first sight.
  • Thirteen years ago she depended on us for her very existence. Today, she would rather not depend on us at all (though I love it when she does realize she still needs me).

So is thirteen an unlucky number? To some it might be, but today, to me, it is the luckiest number there is. I have had thirteen years with this beautiful, caring, wonderful little girl who is growing up to be such an extraordinary young lady. Just a year ago when I looked at her, she still looked like a little girl. It’s amazing how quickly she has matured and changed before my very eyes! Because of her, I have grown as a woman, a mother, a sister, a daughter, and a friend.

Happy Birthday to my Sweet Sweet Emma Kate. I love you more than anything, and I am very very proud of you and the person you’ve become. You truly are amazing, Big Girl.

Love,
Mom

Suddenly, through birthing a daughter, a woman finds herself face to face not only with an infant, a little girl, a woman-to-be, but also with her own unresolved conflicts from the past and her hopes and dreams for the future…. As though experiencing an earthquake, mothers of daughters may find their lives shifted, their deep feelings unearthed, the balance struck in all relationships once again off kilter.
